Case Study: Replacement sewage treatment system for care home

<p>One of the UK&#8217;s largest Facilities Management companies, listed in the FTSE 250, called in Metcor Environmental for urgent remedials for a client of theirs. A major brewery company had started to experience infiltration of effluent from its drainage system into two culverts that ran through the West of England site.</p>
<h2>Next Step:</h2>
<p>The investigations that followed comprised over a dozen personnel, plus the deployment of a confined entry team, and specialist camera works. Eleven colleagues conducted a detailed walk-through of the 200-metre culvert and discovered several areas of corrosion.</p>

Case Study: Remedials for leading brewery

<p>Metcor Environmental provides a PPM service for many sites nationwide for one of Europe&#8217;s largest asset managers, who look after or invest in over a trillion pounds worth of property. Their business park by Heathrow is an established centre for modern offices, warehouses and logistics, and it runs 24/7</p>

<p>A routine CCTV survey was conducted for over 500 metres of the underground drainage system, which comprised over 60 access manhole covers. The survey revealed several structural defects, including a steel cable that had punctured the pipework.</p>

<p>The defects were serious enough to warrant immediate remedial action to prevent further deterioration and potential operational disruption at the site.</p>
<p>Metcor Environmental’s team already had a site plan of all the drainage, waste and clean water pipe systems that it had drawn up when they took on the maintenance for the site.</p>
<p>The remedial works were scheduled over two weekday shifts, beginning at 6 PM and concluding at 3 AM the following day. This out-of-hours schedule was chosen to minimise disruption to the business park&#8217;s operations.</p>

<p>The CCTV camera system transmits a signal so that an above ground locator can identify the spot underground where the steel cable was jutting into the pipe.</p>
<h2>Deployment and Tasks</h2>
<ul>
<li>The engineers sent in a robotic cutter, also with a camera, via the nearest manhole, which cut the cable into two pieces.</li>
<li>They then jetted the cable pieces through the pipe system to the nearest manhole, and removed them.</li>
<li>Having measured and marked the spot where the cable had intruded into the pipe, an inflatable packer was sent through the pipes with a resin patch. When it reached the damaged part of the pipe, it was inflated to the diameter of the pipe, pushing the resin patch outwards, to seal the hole. It was allowed to cure, to harden, for about an hour.</li>
<li>The pipe was then CCTV survey ed again to ensure the patch had been appropriately applied and repaired the hole left by the steel cable.</li>
</ul>

<p>The intensive remedial work spanned two full shifts. The team worked diligently through the night to ensure that the drainage system was restored to optimal functionality without affecting the business park’s operations.</p>

<p>A global facilities management company, with over 400,000 employees and operating across all five continents, selected Metcor Environmental when they needed an emergency response to a pump chamber and system pipework that had become contaminated with diesel.</p>

<p>Annually, over ten million people use this very popular retail and hospitality location, so a major challenge was to provide remedials that would not disrupt continuity. The two pump stations had begun to fail, through pipes blocked with fats, oils and grease.</p>

<p>Several solutions were considered, including:</p>

<li>Purchasing and building an above ground temporary pump station</li>
<li>Bringing in IBC (intermediate bulk container) tanks to make up the operations whilst the pump stations were out of service</li>

<li>Bring in a 4,000-gallon tanker on site in the underground delivery yard</li>
<li>Cone off pathways for delivery and construction traffic; the tanker and works teams could then operate safely 24/7</li>
<li>Over-pump from pump stations as required to the tanker, enabling each pump pit to be renovated in turn &#8211; laying over 90 metres of hoses between tanker and pump stations</li>
<li>Replace old access covers with new double door hinged covers</li>
<li>Disable fire exit by one pump station and build new fire door; access to pump pit would not obstruct fire exit</li>
<li>Pump pits would be stripped, chambers removed, joins in concrete filled, and a specialised coating applied to concrete walls</li>
<li>Metcor&#8217;s sister company, award-winning Anglo Pumps, would install new Sulzer pumps in both stations, together with inverters to maximise efficiency and sustainability</li>
<li>Install new electronic control panels</li>

Case Study: FOG Block Leading to Pump Station and Repair

<p>An upmarket serviced office and conference base is a Grade II listed building, sits by the River Thames, on London’s Embankment. A combined mains sewer and surface water drainage system runs alongside it, and in heavy rainfalls, the plant room floods, requiring expensive remedial works and significant risk to business continuity. Kessel Drainage Solutions, the global pump manufacturer, called in Metcor Environmental to assess the problem and recommend solutions for overcoming the challenges. Metcor conducted a free survey, with our engineers studying plans of the building, then checking and tracing all water pipe and drainage systems, tanks, pumps and electrical installations.</p>

<p>They created an up-to-date CAD plan, marking the building’s water and waste management systems in detail, which the client keeps for future reference, and identified 11 issues in drainage and a further 12 issues with the electrical supplies, which it detailed in two reports with images.</p>
<h2>The Challenges</h2>
<p>The Victorian Grade II listed building meant that access to the plant room was heavily restricted by narrow entrances, staircases and corridors, posing problems for the extraction of old equipment and the installation of new.</p>
<p>The building resides in a tightly controlled City of London noise restriction area, where noisy works could only take place between 6am and 2.30pm on Saturdays. The client did not want the walls in the plant room to be drilled.</p>

<h2>The solution</h2>
<p>With the recommendations in the report accepted and approved, Metcor implemented them within 4 weeks.</p>
<p>Bringing large and heavy plant into the building:</p>
<ul>
<li>The two new pumps each weighed a quarter of a ton, and there was no entry space large enough to winch the new tank into place.</li>
<li>Metcor Environmental and Anglo Pump’s experience in bringing large plant into confined spaces came in handy: the tank was delivered as a ‘flat pack’, carried down to the plant room and built on-site by Metcor engineers.</li>
<li>The pumps were brought to their required site using specialised motorised battery powered stair climbers and transport.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Managing the noise restrictions:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>The plant room and light well were soundproofed specifically for these works, so that Metcor engineers could work every night on the tasks.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>No drilling:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>An internal unistructure was built to avoid drilling into the walls.</li>
</ul>
